Over the Early-Access and launch period, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has been struggling with the general server load issues common with a lot of MMO launches. Significant numbers of players have been unable to log in to their worlds or have found themselves in long queues, and emergency maintenance keeps taking the servers offline. The problems are especially apparent in Europe and North America, and as a result Square Enix have temporarily removed Final Fantasy XIV from their digital store.
As explained on a post on their Facebook page, the response to the game has been "overwhelmingly positive" and as a result:
"we are currently experiencing extremely long wait times for users to be able to log in and play. As a temporary measure, we will halt sales of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A REALM REBORN’s digital download products so we can accommodate all of those wishing to play."
In other words: they underestimated the number of people that would be trying to log on at once, and the traffic keeps bringing their servers down. Square Enix are attempting to increase their server capacity over the next few days, so those of you waiting to purchase your copy might want to leave it until then. Keep an eye on the official Lodestone site or our forums for any important updates.

Lightning, the protagonist of the Final Fantasy XIII series, has always been less feminine than your typical RPG heroine. She's never been afraid to show her masculine qualities, something Snow Villiers learned the hard way in the original game after being punched in the face by her not once, but twice. However, recent promotional materials for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII have occasionally shown us glimpses of a more feminine Lightning. In a recent interview with Polygon, Lightning Returns' game design director Yuji Abe has commented on Lightning's slight shift in personality:
"If you feel that new Lightning is slightly less masculine, or she's a little bit more girly, it's because of two reasons: I think in Lightning Returns, we want to depict her in different lights, not just as one single character behaving the same way all the way through [the Final Fantasy 13 games]. We get to see her and experience different sides and elements of her, maybe one of them being fairly feminine and girly."
"The other reason I can't get very much into without spoiling the story, but in Lightning Returns' story, Lightning has lost a lot of valuable things in her life. That sense of loss might come across here as a kind of vulnerable part of her character. Maybe that's why you could think she seems a bit more feminine."
It seems clear then, that the development team of Lightning Returns wants to explore a different side of Lightning in the game. The only question is just how far her new-found vulnerability and more feminine personality traits will go.
In the rest of the article, Abe talks about the original inspiration for Lightning Returns' time-based mechanics, explaining that the idea resulted from the desire to make the game "world-driven". He also mentions the possibility that Final Fantasy X-2's dressphere mechanic may have been an influence on the decision to allow Lightning to change outfits alongside her class, since both games were directed by Motomu Toriyama. Finally, Abe mentions that the development team removed in-battle AI companions in order to simplify the battle system and make it less complicated for Japanese players.

Through Famitsu, Square-Enix has revealed a new character from Drakengard 3 whose name is Two. She is another Utautai sister to the protagonist, Zero. Two is a protector of a sand country and plays a role of a mood maker. Unlike the previous sisters, she is not seductive and violent. She is described to be cheerful and friendly to everyone, spreading harmony wherever she goes. Her views on love are innocent, but she has a man with whome she shares a mutual affection with.
Some details about the dragon combat are revealed as well. When Zero mounts Mikhail she can use biting attacks, wing-controlled circle attacks, and strong breathe attacks in the sky. When she is riding him, she can turn on her Utautai mode to make those attacks stronger.

Square-Enix has released a new video from Gamescom for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn showing off the Primals that will be included in the game. Primals are powerful beasts that are similar to summons, except they cannot be as easily acquired and summoned as they usually are in offline Final Fantasy titles.
In the video, two types of battles are shown. One is an instanced battle, which is usually started as part of a story quest and as one progresses it can be done in higher difficulty settings. The other works as a FATE type of battle where the primal appears randomly in an area and anyone who happens to be there can participate in fighting it. If it is majorly killed by a single Free Company, they have a chance to control that summon for a limited amount of time and no one else can get it until it is free again.
The video features some old faces that were present in the original version of the game such as Garuda and Ifrit, as well as some new one like Odin and Titan. Check it out below:
IGN has also got a chance to tape their fight with Titan during Gamescom. You can find it here.

Recent news from Siliconera has shed some light on various elements about Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
Firstly, details on what happened to Sazh after the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2. In the new game, Sazh lives in a crashed airship that he has made into a home. For hundreds of years, he has been tormented because Sazh failed to save his son, who has fallen asleep and has not awakened since. Sazh now has a different personality because of this and his goal is to revive Dajh. He won't wake up as his soul is departed from his body and Lumina may have some involvement. In the game, Lightning will run into a baby blue chocobo who has clues on how to save Dajh.
Mog is back and after all this time, his personality had remained intact. Mog regrets not being able to save Serah, but Lightning forgives him. After the events of the previous game, Mog was sucked into a vortex of chaos and had wandered the Void Beyond. In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Mog is the leader of the Moogle Village.
There has been a new outfit called 'Heartseeker'. The weapon is a rapier and Lightning gains an edge in combat when it comes to evading attacks. Lightning can freeze time with Overclock and a familiar move called Army of One can be activated. With this move, Lightning will perform a barrage of attacks while you switch between the outfits that you have equipped.
The Wildlands is the fourth continent in Nova Chrysalia and it is the last wilderness in this dying world. The feel of this area reflects that of Gran Pulse, where monsters are free to explore the area along with forests to run through. This area contains the Moogle Village and the Wildlands Station which is carved into the mountain. Players can also come across a white chocobo that will only respond to Lightning. This wounded chocobo is called the ' Angel of Valhalla' and Lightning saved it from a monster attack. You can nurse it back to health by collecting Gyshal Greens from villagers.
