The official Bravely Default Twitter has confirmed that the western version of the game, due to be released in 2014 in North America and 2013 in Europe, is based on the recently-announced enhanced remake/digital expansion titled Bravely Default: For the Sequel in Japan. This may explain why the localisation seems to be taking a long time, since the original version of the game, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, came out back in 2012 in Japan.

Furthermore, a separate tweet has confirmed that the overseas version will also contain both English and Japanese audio, which is good news for those that prefer to have the original Japanese audio when playing Japanese RPGs.

Finally, Square Enix has also created a new official website for the Japanese version of For the Sequel. The Japanese version will be released both as a full-retail title (priced at 4990yen) and as a digital expansion (priced at 2900yen) on December 5th.

Coverage Restrictions on Final Fantasy XIV Lifted

August 31, 2013
Fox

When Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn went live it was accompanied by a set of rules in the official 'Materials Usage License' which prohibited the monetisation of videos featuring A Realm Reborn footage. The measures essentially stopped all coverage of the game from popular content providers working in new media such as YouTube or Twitch.tv.

Fortunately for everyone, Square Enix have revised these rules. Although videos using A Realm Reborn materials are still generally prohibited for commercial use, there are exceptions for those involved in partner programs on various popular media websites. Amateurs should still be wary about accepting advertising revenue for their videos, but for professional content providers who make a living out of these videos it once again means that Final Fantasy XIV can receive the coverage it deserves - excellent news for consumers, video makers and Square Enix alike.

The fully revised Materials Usage License can be found here.

To coincide with the launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Square Enix released a number of new and updated policies such as User Agreements, a list of Prohibited Behaviours and so on. One of these policies is the 'Materials Usage License,' which covers what people can and cannot do with copyrighted material from Final Fantasy XIV.

While many of these clauses are standard, of particular interest are the following points:

  • The video must not require a paid membership for viewing;
  • You may not monetize your video via the YouTube partner program or any similar programs on other video sharing sites.
  • You may not combine or synchronize the Materials with third party content (e.g., a mash-up), but you may include the Materials alongside third party content (e.g., before or after in the same video) as long as you also have permission from the original copyright owner);

The points mean that content creators who work primarily on YouTube or through other video mediums (such as Twitch.tv or video review websites) will be unable to monetise their videos, which has already led to a number of high profile online content providers refusing to provide any coverage for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

So if you notice a strange lack of videos and livestreams of this game, this is why, and if anybody has any plans of their own to create Final Fantasy XIV video content, the full material usage license can be found here.

An expansion/re-release of Square Enix's 3DS RPG, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, has been announced in the latest edition of Weekly Jump magazine. The new version of the game, curiously titled Bravely Default: For the Sequel, is set to include a range of improvements and new features, including:

- New storyline events
- Reformed controls
- An auto-battle mode during combat
- Selectable difficulty levels
- Additional saveslots (3 in total)
- Support for save files from the original version of the game

The new version will be released both as a full-retail title and as a digital expansion in Japan on December 5th. The retail version will be priced at 4990yen while the digital expansion version will be priced at 2900yen.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy was originally released on October 11th, 2012 in Japan. A western localisation is in the works and is set to be released in 2014 in North America with a European release coming either later this year or in 2014. It is unclear whether the western version of the game will be affected by this new announcement, or if For the Sequel will released in Japan only.

Perhaps the most interesting element of this new announcement, however, is the new version's subtitle. Are Square Enix going to use this game to fund a full-blown sequel?
