Square Enix Members get Exclusives

March 18, 2008
Kyle

Square Enix North America has opened up a members service on it's own website now, easily enough names Square Enix Members.

SE is promising exclusive content for those that sign up, and without a doubt the most wanted content is Final Fantasy XIII content. We wouldn't be at all surprised if we started getting news on XIII out of SE NA's own member site soon.

You can pre-register now, but the site doesn't open until Monday, so you're not missing anything if you don't rush over there right away (except maybe that elusive Cloud or Sephiroth username, I've got my Kyll).

When you sign up there's a brief questionaire and the usual email check, other than that should take more than a couple minutes tops. I just wonder if SE will host it's own forum for once.

Thanks to Monkey for the tip.

That's right, the FXN Network is expanding, and we're happy to announce today the sister site to FF-XIII.net, FinalFantasyXIII.net.

The new site will run along side FF-XIII.net, sharing the FXN Forums, but have a different focus. While FF-XIII.net focuses mainly on reporting news and all the important Square Enix happenings, with FinalFantasyXIII.net we'll be experimenting with frequent site updates, with not only News, but Articles, Competitions, more Media and more Entertainment.

FinalFantasyXIII.net launches later this month and is headed up by myself (Kyle Wynen) and fellow staffer Colin Tan Wei (Hardedge), along with Katie Wilhelm, Hido Harada (Hidoaki), Monkey (of KHInsider.com), Lauren (of KHInsider.com) and Jamie Courts.

We've prepared a splash page for the site and have loads of affiliates lined up already. FinalFantasyXIII.net is also open to free hosting (details on the site).

Final Fantasy XIII Promo Video on Mobile Channel

March 8, 2008
Finalfantasykid

Square Enix has been providing an array of content on their newly created Mobile Phone Channel. It would only be a matter of time before we saw some Final Fantasy XIII content on there, and now is that time. A Final Fantasy XIII Promotional video has been put up for download for the "905i" mobile phone.

Unfortunately this is the only way to download the video, so we will have to wait until it someone manages to upload it somewhere else before we get our hands on it.

"Somnus" Confirmed as Drammatica Track

February 26, 2008
Finalfantasykid

Though it was already suspected that "Somnus" (The song which plays during both Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailers) it is now confirmed that it is indeed the track from the newly released CD "drammatica ~ The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura".

Square Enix has a webiste for the CD, which features the track list, along with some information about the album. There is also a preview button, though it is non-existent at this moment, however hopefully it will be online, and maybe include a preview of the versus track.

GDC: Square Enix's Press Conference

February 22, 2008
Finalfantasykid

Square Enix had their press conference and Q & A session today, and they seemed to mainly focus on Final Fantasy XIII.

The discussion began with the topic of the high quality graphics Square is always able to pull of in FMVs. Isamu Kamikokuryo was asked about how they cope with the uncanny valley problem and he responded by saying "In terms of the uncanny valley, that is something we have to fight against. We can't go there -- that's basically how we feel about it. For all the things we create, many of the section creators get together and we make adjustments so this uncanny valley phenomenon doesn't happen. We don't usually use that phrase, because all the staff has this in mind while we do our work."

Kamikokuryo also explains that for Final Fantasy XIII, they want to keep Tetsuya Nomura's Uniqueness (for character designs), but also have some more realism to the designs.

He compares the situation to Pixar animations, in that they don't necessarily look real, but that style adds to the theme. Kamikokuryo goes on to say that they are constantly struggling between realism, and stylization. He also says that "We're trying to create something at the edge of the uncanny valley. Indeed, we feel some tension there."

Next, a trailer for Final Fantasy XIII was shown, and before it began, Kamikokuryo attempted to describe the story a little without revealing too much. "characters have to fight against the world... the world of enemies."

Next was a slide show, showcasing the concept art for Final Fantasy XIII. Some of the images shown were of Cocoon, and of Pulse. Vehicles and Airships were also displayed, and this included the massive airships we have seen in the past, as well as an insect-like motor bike.

---
Hopefully we will get to see the trailer, and these images soon.
