Final Fantasy XV Unveiled for Playstation 4 and Xbox One (http://www.finalfantasy-fxn.net/index.php?page=article&article=--1885&edit=true)

Final Fantasy XV has been officially unveiled for Playstation 4 and confirmed for Xbox One. The game formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been re-branded and will now bear the official mark and weight of expectation that only a true Final Fantasy sequel can bring. In a brief introductory video at Sony's E3 press-conference in Los Angeles, Nomura-san also mentioned there would be more updates to follow in the coming days.

History was definitely made today. FFXV & KHIII HOTDAMN! Nomura brought the goods, and Square Enix wants its crown back bad.

I said wow. I'm at a loss for words. It was so seamless, like a CGI cutscene expect it was gameplay. New characters too! and seeing little Noctis was pretty neat.
Lastly that new Shimomura music geez...

I need to sit down ha.

Bingo. Besides it's time a ARPG gradutated away from short kiddy hack-n-slasher games to something huge, emersing, with cool sexy characters. Not ever arpg has to be rinky-dink with and made for kids. This one can be the first FF that break the model in a genre way instead of a music or adding voice acting way like with FFX. I remember how I favorite part in Ff12 were the huge towns. In this trailer I'll always remember the part where he hangs on the white pillar.

Oh wow ! I have no words.... it looks amazing and yeah it is a Action RPG but Square-Enix can't do the same thing for every Final Fantasy title and it looks like it works really, really well.

So stop complaining haters.

Even though I do love and miss the 3/4 party battle system and would love to see it in a modern day Final Fantasy game.

I don't think there's anyone hating here. But people are naturally scared of change.
I think when the game's in their hands and the music's blaring I think they'll accept it and enjoy it for what it is.
I always wanted to see a detective game by SE with all the action pack stylings of Star Ocean 3, but it never happen. Never will I bet.
But I'm not gonna sit around and complain about what I'm NOT getting.

Apparently this is floating around from a guy named Vesperion in Siliconera who think this shows that XV and KH3 are NOT exlcusive or may not be. Only 14 is.

Jesus
06-11-2013, 07:23 AM
Right now, neither FF15 or KH3 are signed on the dotted line exclusive. FF15 was, once upon a time, pretty much expected as SCE were the ones who made the initial approach for that project to be changed to a next generation platform. KH3 was pursued aggressively, and was near enough finalised about a month ago, but since the MS reveal, a fair few things have changed. So, things are on hold right now, and the contract is essentially in the air. However, SCE does have options on exclusive games from SE.

Secondly, people should really disregard this whole Sony co-developing nonsense. I've said before it's exaggerated, and it really is. I'm also quite confident the so called 'sources' of this nonsense rumour are probably derived from a couple PMs of mine back at the end of January. I told a fair few people (one ended up having a meltdown, and then getting banned), and I imagine some went to places like VGLeaks, and then other sites picked up on it later.

Anyhow, game looks really nice. The segments in the building, and the water city with the boats and European/ME architecture are all real time.

I don't mind if it's exclusive or not because just having it in some way or form would be amazing, just playing FF XV and KH 3 would just be good enough. Just imagine playing through the Citdel like buildings with Nocty and playing through all the new Disney worlds in KH 3 with Sora, Goofy and Donald.

Though I hope it's a Playstation Exclusive. You see I didn't mind back then on the PS3 and Xbox 360 but Xbox One is a terrible console that blocks used games must be connected in 24 hours, and Kinect required to be on at all times! Y'know, a couple months ago I was discussing this game with friends and said I couldn't care less what Square Enix has to announce. I just couldn't accept the idea of them taking 7+ years of developing and teasing a title as PS3 exclusive, only to release it a whole console generation later. After all, many people originally bought their PS3 just to play FFXIII and Versus XIII.

"Square Enix is dead to me."

Now I must take back those words. This was the best reveal Square has ever made. This was the best press conference Sony has ever made. I don't care if these games come out on Microsoft's console (is anyone seriously considering buying one at this point?), the fact Tetsuya Nomura himself showed us a glimpse of Versus and Kingdom Hearts 3 has made this year's E3 legendary in my mind.

Final Fantasy XV is alive and well. Just don't make gamers wait another 7 years ever again.

Nomura on XV (http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/06/nomura-e3-part-2-final-fantasy-xv/)

Tetsuya Nomura’s livestream interview at E3 2013 went beyond discussing the Kingdom Hearts franchise. After showing us a new gameplay trailer, they immediately began talking about Final Fantasy XV!

Nomura right away explains that the trailer will be available to view on the company website after the livestream.
Regarding the name change from Versus XIII and the “feel” of being a numbered title: within the company, about one to two years after Versus XIII was announced, discussions were had on its scale and concept. It was considered that the game may be appropriate for Final Fantasy XV. They talked about it for several years. Two years ago (sometime in 2011), developers began to hear about next-generation consoles, and the team decided to make Final Fantasy Versus XIII into FFXV. One year ago, they decided that all development will shift to next-generation consoles, and the name was officially changed.
The game will be an action-based RPG. Not much turn-based style will feature in XV, but in the trailer, we can see a command system in the screen. Nomura tried to keep the “taste” of Final Fantasy; he’s not trying to make it all action. The game being a Final Fantasy entry is the most important thing. If Final Fantasy were to become an action game, Nomura feels that this game would come closest to showing what that would be like.
The interviewer notes that Noctis has many fans, but he is very mysterious. Nomura, meanwhile, describes Noct as “not cool” on the inside. Appearances can be deceiving. He’s rather cocky, and him not being cool is actually his main characteristic.
In Final Fantasy games, one’s party is necessary. How to use them is a core feature in Final Fantasy games, in regards to taking turns, how to act, etc. Noctis can battle by himself, but in the trailer, we can see him with other characters, as well. There will be lots of team cooperation, but it will be different from previous Final Fantasies. In the new gameplay trailer, we see three players/characters cooperating with each other to fight a giant (or a Behemoth). There will be drama in these interactions. It won’t be too systematic, but rather, it will have some story aspects to it as well. Nomura and his team are aware that battling with one’s party is necessary in the Final Fantasy series.
Unlike what the interviewer thought, Noctis doesn’t defy gravity/use gravity spells, but rather has the ability to teleport himself, including into the sky. In trying to make a game realistic, it becomes impossible to enjoy. Nomura has been trying to figure out a good balance between realism and the game’s main entertainment as a “fantasy.”
Until about a year ago, the team was making FFXV for current-generation consoles as well. But next-generation consoles, according to Nomura, have better quality. This better quality only increases as the development proceeds.
The way of developing the game (or games in general) has changed. Before, when going multi-platform, a game would be fit to one console’s specifications and would be “evened out” to other consoles. But now, games made in a different way. Nomura always had in mind that he didn’t want to make a game that compromises quality.
This time, using a different development method, Nomura chose not to look at consumer consoles to meet their specifications; instead, he focused on making higher quality games. They used a development tool called DirectX 11 to make the game. The consoles that handle that tool can be used to port the game. The team hopes to maintain the original high quality of the game they’re making when it’s ported to consoles.
Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV are both coming to PS4 and the Xbox One, but DirectX 11 is the key: whichever hardware is compatible with DirectX 11, the team will keep that hardware in consideration.

No word yet on why exactly Versus XIII has been kept in the dark for so long, but it sounds likely that the shift to next-generation consoles (and the name change) played a big role in its absence over the past two years. It’s also possible that Nomura’s new philosophy on game development lended itself to the game’s development time, but whether or not he was specifically referring to XV or modern games in general wasn’t made clear.

Stay tuned for more E3 updates as the week continues!

Although it sounds from that transcript like the game might still be a while away, I can't quite tell though.

Nowhere near as long as Kingdom Hearts though. They're still 'considering' entire fundamental game systems on that, so I'd say KH3 is still in pre-production. Versus...I mean, FFXV is way out of that stage and is probably in an early pre-alpha build right now. This means all the features are designed but they have not all been implemented yet - it probably is not possible to do a full play through of the game although I doubt it's too far off being at that stage.

I can't wait to see the scale of this game, I hope we get to see some exploration down the line, perhaps at TGS, because the impression I'm getting is that this game is very big indeed.

Based on the information released so far (and the fact that there is an international website up now!) it seems as if this game will actually release! :D Initially the fact that it is multiplatform annoyed me (bad memories of FFXIII all over again) but I'll try to be positive. PS4 is lead platform at any rate

I don't know if I've grown up or what but this news no long excite me as it did 7 years ago when Versus was first announced for the unreleased PS3...Albeit, I will probably buy both KH3 and FF15 when they are released on PS5 in 2023 or later. Yeah...my trust in Square is long gone.

Interview with Tetsuya Nomura said "Final Fantasy XV" and "Kingdom Hearts III"! [E3 2013] (http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/651/651871/)

PS4/Xbox One for software that Square Enix has announced at E3 as "Final Fantasy XV," "Kingdom Hearts III". I will deliver the interview with Nomura Tetsuya Square Enix dealing with these works.

In addition, for a more detailed interview, since the publication, with electricity and online June 20, released June 27 in the "blitz PlayStation", do not miss there.

■ "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" is the title change to "Final Fantasy XV"!

- Latest video was shocking in many ways, but, please tell us about the point where the title is changed first.

Project announcement of "fa bra Nova Christa squirrel" from (2006), from the company, encouraged the development of the renamed "FFXV" in about two years later, later, it changed to "FFXV" Send the computer through in the "Versus" consider whether to have'm was followed.

http://youtu.be/DDucrHWAFdk

- Is it was the thought of either pro as Mr. Nomura?

It was complicated at first, but it is the story thankfully, or because it was said to be nice to not change the content by making the numbering, about two years ago, I was coming to talk about the timing of information disclosure. In addition, the third film even if it is announced in to the image of Lightning has established the "FFXIII" related. Still, after watching the PV of "FF Versus XIII," Some people are mistaken that it is "FFXIII-2" is inside. There was also a sense that want to avoid such confusion.

- "Final Fantasy XV" is, whether I will become what kind of treatment as the positioning of the work?

I was away from the "FFXIII" series, but it does not change to being one share the myth of "fa bra Nova Christa squirrel" series.

We must keep to talk before, but the story of our Nokuto I do not end with this one work. Although celebrates naturally separated once.

- When it comes to things like sequel of "Final Fantasy XIII-2"?

You can not talk yet to detail, the display at the end of the PV, are you talking to be a hen of the grand epic this. If you try to keep the volume while maintaining the quality, feel "FF" a quality, some means is required. Because I think that the landing would be what kind of shape, but you can enjoy it, please wait for the follow-up.

- Even just by looking at the battle scene in the image, we can expect high-quality content in the speedy.

Element is also added still have a long way to go, but, if you Could take in the image at the moment. Nokuto of the hero, of course, and weapons motion fellow characters are also elaborate very rich. You can if you are pursuing a fantasy realistic caught and the exhilaration and enjoy the game remains in the image quality.

- You've seen many work situations with peers.

Cooperation is one of the parts have to focus this time. Fight all directions which made full use of the warp or was possible Nokuto, site destruction of monster or can, and can also move over the body of a large monster in free-run, and is trying many other.

- The story is multilayered mysteries still more, Are there any theme that you talk about at the moment?

It is a difficult question, but I wonder if become ...... "bonds" theme of the story once. Foundation of the story is something heavy in serious, but Nori is comparatively loose comedy. In this conversation, I am aware of the day-to-day dialogue with peers. Depending on the perspective, conversation has fun (laughs).

- New information or will be published at any time in the future?

Of that, also as soon as you release this truly It is difficult. But, for example, I want to continue to publish information in the case of events such as the Tokyo Game Show.

http://youtu.be/pTQ2C978xVc

■ announcement fans around the world looked forward to also "Kingdom Hearts III"!

- I have been waiting for "Kingdom Hearts III" has been unveiled.

Video Because this movie only a teaser, information that you show you are few. Please stay tuned because it introduces over again, such as the battle system is costumes and sky.

- Texture of character, seems to have changed from far ...?

Original "Kingdom Hearts" was the base of image creation, with shading which reproduced more beautiful brush picture of Disney work, it uses the term "Kingdom shader" in development within.

- The story ...... the form that follows "Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance]" from?

That's right. It has developed far is the final chapter of "Dark Seeker Hen". So that it is easy to go to the beginner series, I want to think of other tricks in various ways.

The Future of Final Fantasy Event Report (http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/06/the-future-of-final-fantasy-event-report/)

Following the announcement of both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III at Sony’s press conference on Monday night, Square Enix held a private press event to provide further details on the future of both series.

We had a chance to see it for ourselves, and over the course of an hour were treated to the company’s plans for their first foray into the next generation of games and game platforms.

The presentation kicked off with a brief montage of several key titles – FFXIV, X|X-2 HD, XV, LRFFXIII, and KHIII. Following that, incoming CEO Yosuke Matsuda took the stage to kick things off – first by expressing his enthusiasm at being able to work with Disney again and his wish to create a game that can live up to fan expectation. Matsuda also touched on Final Fantasy – confirming both Lightning Returns and FFX|X-2 HD for this fiscal year, as well as the company’s desire to reassert how wonderful the FF brand is.

From now, they plan to stand strong and push forward in a more active way.

Following Matsuda’s lead, Naoki Yoshida took the stage to talk about Final Fantasy XIV. Launching worldwide this August on PC and PlayStation 3, he began his segment by rolling a new trailer – The Crystal’s Call. Composed of entirely in-game footage, Yoshida reminded us that yes – this is a MMO. The dramatic, movie style trailer (which has been posted online as of this writing) further confirmed Sony’s announcement of a PS4 version of the title, which will be launching sometime in 2014.

According to Yoshida, although XIV is a MMO, it still contains the heart and soul of the series. Not only is the PC version special, but also the PS3 version – so much so that he believes with confidence XIV will be the highest quality MMO on the platform. For those attending E3, both versions are playable on the show floor.

With the PS4 version, the team sees it as an opportunity to reach even more users. Of course, the PS4 version will also be cross platform, with data transfer available from PC and PS3. They’re currently working with Sony for a smooth transition of the product.

Now onto Final Fantasy XV – the reveal trailer from Sony’s conference began to roll on screen. Shinji Hashimoto took the stage shortly after to thank everyone for their continued support of the FF series and the XV announcement. After the initial reveal he was so excited he couldn’t even sleep that night! He exclaims that it’s such a joy to finally be able to announce the fifteenth chapter in the series.

With the talk of next generation platforms, Hashimoto explained that XV’s development has been shifted to a DirectX 11 environment which makes it easy to port to similar environments. In addition to PlayStation 4, the game will be ported to Xbox One.

An all new trailer was then shown – all in-game and a work in progress. The familiar Shimomura theme starts to play as Noctis battles a massive behemoth. The scene from the original E3 trailer is now being rendered in real time as a circle of weapons reflect bullets from armored soldiers. Numbers appear above enemies as you deal damage – a Final Fantasy staple promised by Nomura years back. Combat seemed much evolved from the 2011 trailer – including hints of stealth and underwater interaction. With the trailer’s end, Hashimoto promises it’s progressing to a more powerful and beautiful – although neglected to share any release time frame.

Next up, Yoshinori Kitase took the stage to talk up Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD and Lightning Returns. Another trailer – Kitase promises that old and new fans alike will enjoy the new life that is being breathed into this title. With Lightning Returns, Kitase says development has been extremely challenging. With the game consisting of action-packed gameplay and a sprawling world, he says it’s the ultimate FF for the current generation of platforms.

Following another look at the LRFFXIII E3 trailer, Hashimoto returned to the stage – this time to discuss Kingdom Hearts III and its debut video. Matsuda then took the stand to share his excitement for the title as a fan and the introduction of Co-President of Disney Interactive John Pleasants to further detail today’s announcements.

With sales of over 19 million units, Kingdom Hearts is a most important franchise to Disney. With KHIII, a mature Sora will take to adventure across new Disney worlds with familiar friends Mickey, Donald and Goofy – as well as striving to deliver world-class gameplay and story to fans around the world. Hashimoto then returned to the stage again to share the announcement of Kingdom Hearts III not only coming to PlayStation 4, but also to Xbox One – a first for Microsoft platforms.

Ending the presentation was a bit of Q&A with Hashimoto, who offered attendees to quiz him on nearly anything XV, KH or otherwise.

To start, Hashimoto confirmed that both XV and KHIII will release on both platforms in Japan. When asked about potential sequels to XV – similar to what has happened with FFXIII – he explained that “more information will come” and that the XV universe is large with many stories to be told. Regarding XV proper, development is advancing forward, although the Sony trailer contained a great deal of CG.

The main development staff has not changed very much since the development of the PS3 version – in fact many have been added instead. Hashimoto was playing Versus XIII on PS3, and he felt the difference when he played the first PS4 based tests.

On the question of whether or not the game deserves to be a mainline title based on its mechanics, Hashimoto explains that each entry tends to be different anyway so this time they wanted to move ahead with an action-based system. However, this doesn’t determine what future titles will be – the next mainline title may very well be a more traditional RPG. That said, Hashimoto eagerly anticipates fan feedback on the less RPG and more action focused gameplay. He believes there is a future for both action-based and command-based RPGs, but the action style is definitely more fitting for XV’s design – it seems a lot of people are concerned about the game not being an RPG. The Final Fantasy series is always evolving and they view the switch to action in this title as positive move.

When asked if Hashimoto had anything to say to PlayStation gamers about the inclusion of an Xbox One version, he reminded us that XI and XIII had already appeared on Microsoft platforms. This is the first time they’ve decided to do a simultaneous announcement so he hopes people will understand.

Given the already lengthy development, another attendee asked how the team will keep Nomura on track this time. Hashimoto laughed, saying that while Nomura is key there are many other supporting staff who will keep the game on schedule.

Another question on female characters and why the game is so male focused – to which Hashimoto says he’ll pass the feedback on for.

In terms of other platforms, a PC version has not been decided even though Square Enix is always actively looking into PC development. Right now the only FF for PC will be XIV. As for the PS4 and Xbox One versions, Hashimoto promises to share more information later on whether or not both versions will be launching simultaneously.

Hashimoto also reiterated that Agni’s Philosophy is not a game – it’s a tech demo for Luminous Engine. That engine will powering FFXV.

On Kingdom Hearts as a series, there are currently no plans to offer the HD collections on Xbox. Hashimoto suggests that those fans who haven’t played the originals or PS3 versions to perhaps catch themselves up on the story in other ways. The game is being developed by Square Enix’s Osaka studio – who previously worked on Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance as well as the HD remasters. As far as new worlds go – the team has expressed interest in the past about bringing Pixar titles into the fold, however, Hashimoto is currently not at liberty to speak about that yet.

Quite a lot to soak in in just an hour, but there you have it!

@Squirrel
They should just flip the background to white and keep it like that, following the old European box-art tradition. That said there isn't much point in reading into that cover too much since it's just a placeholder.

EDIT: Definitely sounds like timed-exclusivity might be a possibility. Maybe Sony are still inquiring about the possibility and thus they can't talk about it to the public yet?

Famitsu

Some interesting notes:

- Nomura says the final line in the FFXV trailer is not part of the game's story, it was just added as a gag for the name change reveal. (This is the line about the "fifteenth coming".)

- He acknowledge that the "A world of the VERSUS epic" tagline at the end of the trailer specifically refers to the possibility of turning the setting into a series of its own. He says the story in FFXV will reach a climax, but it is like the conclusion of a single part of a larger epic (poem). There will be room for more stories to be told.

- He is aware that for large scale console development projects, there might be a need to keep people interested in the long term with online elements rather than just offer a short term single player experience. There are no concrete plans as of yet but he's looking at all possibilities to see what fits.

- S-E is interested in expanding new FF experiences on the PS Vita, as well as smartphones and tablets. They won't be the same old FF experiences, but something new.

- There will be more of FFXV shown from now onwards, especially at big events like TGS.

- They're calling the shading technique in KH3 the "Kingdom Shader" and the shaders they use will change with each world to create more authentic visual experiences based on the Disney source material. (This was already mentioned in the S-E Radio interview on their Youtube channel earlier.)

- For FFXV and KH3, they're currently looking into using Luminous Studio as the main engine. By developing on an Overspec (PC environment I presume), it makes porting the same content to both PS4 and Xbox One easier.

- The battle footage in the trailer (I think he's talking about KH3, since that was the leading question) is a movie, because the tools they're using have difficulty outputting stuff on the actual systems right now, but he promises that runs in realtime in the dev environment and it should look the same eventually.

- The two biggest new things in KH3 which he talks about are "crazy scale action" and way better enemy AI. He confirms that there will be a 3 character party in the game, but NPCs and allies in each world will also join in battles, and there will be crazy epic aerial action blahblahbalh sound like KH. He also talks about enemy AI being more complex and being able to interact with the player, like Sora riding on a vehicle type enemy and so on.

- They are also considering online features for KH3, as well as other features which have not been in KH before. (Nomura is a very considerate person. He seems open to considering anything.)

- Nomura thinks that it would be great if they can time the release of more information on KH3 at the D23 Expo Japan in October along with TGS. KH3 is seen as a rival production for FFXV. Get hype, etc.

A rival production? That either means Versus is further back in development than we thought or KH3 is further along. (Or neither of those, that's what I take from that though.) Nice to have regular news on this title though. ^_^

Google translate im guessing.. ..

Yeah, by 'rival' read 'simultaneous'. You're never really competing with your own games anyway, and KH isn't even at a state where they can show actual in-game footage; XV is. So they're definitely far apart in terms of development stage. Of course, depending on the scale of each game, that gap may be much more narrow by release time.

I don't want to be too critical on the graphics since this is still early days, and we still don't fully know what the capabilities of the next generation platforms will be, but certain aspects of the game don't look that impressive. For example, that water looks pretty sub par, both that murky water seen flying all over the place, and the water that Noctis is swimmin in in the gameplay trailer. I hope they can polish things nicely before the final release. The animations look very impressive though, and the gameplay itself looks extremely fun, and epic.

I'd like to say that none of this game really looks that realistic, compare it to your Frostbite driven Battlefield 4 or the Mirror's Edge 2 trailer. XV has a slightly bright look to it that comes largely with PS3 games.

6 years ago, I was unimaginably excited about Versus XIII and all SE did was disappoint me. I know better now than to get my hopes up (although of course I'm not saying you guys shouldn't). If FFXV comes out and is well received I'll buy the game and play it. But I'm not hyping it again.

I think trust in a team is something that needs to be built up over time. It's only natural that 7 years waiting time since the announcement of a game is going to annoy a lot of people. And despite the trailer looking decent, it wasn't amazing (imo) and there was no release date. Square Enix have not been very good to their fans - they deserve some backlash. From my end, I'm much older now than I was then and have simply moved on.

I do hope that FFXV turns out well though. If I had seen those trailers with the game in a conventional development cycle I would have been very excited about its potential.

Fox
06-13-2013, 11:38 AM
And to be fair, the 'hate' is very much a vocal minority. On most trailers and such that I see the upvoted stuff that bubbles to the surface is very positive. I think people generally are pretty excited, there is just a bit more caution then there would have been in the past because of the fact the game has been MIA for seven years and of course they've been (relatively) burned recently with the XIII saga.

But I'm excited. Lots of people are very excited. And as long as it continues to look awesome as more details emerge and it continues to get shown at events like TGS, the hype will build and lingering worries will begin to subside.

One thing I learned today that makes me feel very confident about this game is that although the characters were conceived by Nomura, they are being written by Kazushige Nojima. Now, Nojima didn't have much of a hand in XIII (he was scenario concept, not the writer), but some of the games he did write on include:

- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy VIII
- Final Fantasy X

If I'm not mistaken, those games were all received reasonably well...

Square-Enix Considered Rebranding Final Fantasy Versus XIII into Final Fantasy XV Two Years Ago

Nomura says during the interview that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was large enough in scope within the first year or two of having been announced, that Square Enix had already considered rebranding it as Final Fantasy XV. It was decided two years ago that it would shift to next-gen consoles and it was officially decided to move the title over as Final Fantasy XV sometime last year.
http://www.siliconera.com/2013/06/13/square-enix-considered-rebranding-versus-xiii-to-final-fantasy-xv-early-on/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+siliconera%2FMkOc+%28Siliconera %29

It might have been mentioned in earlier interviews that we posted, not sure.

Final Fantasy XV's director on art, the modern setting and crazy hair (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/final-fantasy-xvs-director-art-modern-setting-crazy-hair-6C10312260)

NBC News: Some say that the "Final Fantasy" games are getting too modern for a game with "fantasy" in its name — but of course, tech and magic have always been at odds in the series. How do you see it?

Tetsuya Nomura: I don't like the extreme cases of tech or magic. If I choose, I choose a modern setting — but that's not a good setting for a game. So if you look at "FFXV," it starts in a very modern world similar to Shinjuku (in downtown Tokyo), but when the story starts, you go to the medieval world — but the weapons they are using are high tech-weapons; that kind of combo is what I like.

In all "FF" titles in the past, there were no titles in extreme high or low fantasy, they always had a mixture. There was some weight on one side or the other, but it was always mixed. Personally, when I play games, I cannot be emotionally involved if the game starts in an imaginary fantasy world — so I want to start in the modern world and branch out into the fantasy.

A: When I design the "silhouette" (i.e. general outline) I make suggestions such as "this character should carry something long on his back." Before, I used to design weapons as well, but now I only design characters. It was until "FFX" that I was doing weapons — if you remember the Buster Sword and Gunsword, those were suggested back to the developer teams and they used them in gameplay.

It was until "FF8" that I designed monsters. If you look at the trailer for "FFXV," the behemoth and giants were originally designed for "FF7" and "FF8" by me; they were redesigned for "XV."

Q: Where does character inspiration come from? Modern fashion, history books or does it just spring into your head?

A: It's not like I'm always thinking about character design. When I receive orders, I start imagining things. The image of that character, the "silhouette," comes into my mind, and from that I start thinking of details. In the past I would probably flip through the pages of fashion magazines, now I look through the Web pages of my favorite brands.

Q: Does character design have a big effect on gameplay, or is it the other way around? Do level designers say "We need an ice monster" and you comply, or can you also say "This character I've made should definitely use a spear"?

Q: On that note, and this might sound a little silly, but hair has always appeared to be a big part of your character design. Has that become more important as technology enables it?

A: If you look at the real world, you don't see too many extreme hairstyles. That's why characters in games should have unique hairstyles. It's just one way to showcase each character's personality. We do have to deform some realistic hairstyles to more game-appropriate styles.

Sometimes I wish we had the easiness Western FPS (first-person shooters) have, to make everyone bald. We're a company that's known for unique hairstyles, but in a way we're running out of ideas.

Q: Are there any artists or games in particular that have inspired you or that fans should check out?

A: The reason I joined Square was because I loved Amano-san's art (Yoshitaka Amano, who has done "FF" logos and design since the beginning). When I was in high school, my art teacher told me about Amano-san. I really only joined because of him; I wasn't interested in the gaming world at all. In a way, it was him who hired me, and whom I respect the most.

To be honest I don't see that many unique hairstyles in XV yet, although I'm mainly looking at the main characters. Noctis' hair isn't anything that different to what we've seen before, Ignis has a mullet (sort of like Kaz in Metal Gear Solid, except spiked at the front) and Gladiolus has a similar mullet except the top is waved backwards. But I guess some of the newer characters (antagonists presumably) do seem to have more different hairstyles.

I'm so glad Nomura mentioned Amano. I really got into FF and art because of Amano as well. I prefer his character designs over Nomura's. Actually, all of the details in his designs would be more easily incorporated with today's graphics. :)
In the early FFs his character designs were so flashy, and in the game the sprites only had room for a leotard and a cape. :D

I've only had an issue with hairstyle after FFX came about. (Seymore).

FFXV Team Is Undecided about PC port and Considers Off-Screen Features from PSVita, Tablets, and Smartphones (http://www.finalfantasy-fxn.net/index.php?page=article&article=FFXV-Team-Is-Undecided-about-PC-port-and-Considers-Off-Screen-Features-from-PSVita-Tablets-and-Smartphones--1919)

In the latest issue of Famitsu, Director Tetsuya Nomura, and co-director Hajima Tabata, and Total Visual Director Takeshi Nozue shed light on the recently announced, Final Fantasy XV.

The development team utilizes the Microsoft DirectX11 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/directx-11) software in a high-setting PC environment to operate Final Fantasy XV. Since both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One support the software, the game will be released on both consoles. Although the odds of the game porting to Wii U is nil, it can work on PCs. However, this has yet to be officially confirmed as it is currently undecided by Square-Enix.

Again, Final Fantasy XV requires a high-end PC to run it and because of this the development team is measuring the potential “demand” from PC users.

Square-Enix also considers incorporating the PlayStation Vita, tablets, and smartphones to the gameplay of Final Fantasy XV. The game features that these devices may hold are unknown at this point.

Square-Enix’s creative decision to make Final Fantasy XV an Action RPG and abandon the trademark turn-base battle system indicates the company new direction for gaming. Producer Shinji Hashimoto wishes that fans will appreciate the shift in combat gameplay and will be asked for feedback soon. In addition, the player will be able to let Noctis climb onto monsters (as shown in the E3 Gameplay Trailer) as well as switch between three characters in real time. But, if Noctis gets slain, then it’s game over.

Hashimoto says that more information on the game will be announced soon! So, stay tuned.

"Square-Enix’s creative decision to make Final Fantasy XV an Action RPG and abandon the trademark turn-base battle system indicates the company new direction for gaming. "

Am I the only one who finds things like this just too pretentious? They are trying to make it sound as if what we see of XV is exactly what was thought for the numbered titles specifically when we all know the game was originally Versus and was around for half a decade? I doubt they are abandoning turn-based gameplay for action just because it's their creative decision... It's more to fit in a game that they already have on hands and have to find a better way to market it so it wouldn't be associated with 13 or be some spin-off in fan's eyes. -.-

Fabian_CH
06-19-2013, 01:17 PM
No, Kat, you're not the only one. That way of framing it seemed odd, though I didn't have such an eloquent way of saying it.

Basically, they're branding a spin-off that was going to change up the gameplay (by using a battle system developed for their other big series that was in itself a spin-off), as a complete innovation. I know that's a bit harsh to say it like that, it looks like they've refined the battle system quite a lot, but, well... You get the point ;)

Not to mention they've been looking for ways to get out of the static turn-based system ever since XII.

All that said, I'm really looking forward to XV :)

I bet you anything it will be announced at E3 2018 that there is an internal discussion at Square and a decision to change the name to FFXVII and will be released for PS5 and AppBoX (at that time in the future, Apple and Microsoft merge together to fight against Sony because Xbox1 is killed 2 years after being released due to DRM restricted)

Nephany
06-19-2013, 02:38 PM
So, we have the PS4 selling at $400 (not including waranty and taxes), and we have the PS Vita selling at around $240 (not including waranty and taxes and I pulled this price from Amazon). Then we have FFXV which will sell at about $60 (again, not including taxes). That's...let's see...$700. The warranty price for my PS3 was around $100 when the PS3 first came out. The warranty on the PS Vita is around (given benefit of the doubt) around $50-60. That's about $150 on warranties. (Albeit, your machines will break exactly ONE day after the warranties expire). If I wanted to go out there and buy all of these things in the city I live in, that would be $700 for the systems and the game plus $150 in warranty costs plus 11% sales tax...that's getting really close to a thousand dollars.

It's going to be a stretch just for some people to go out and buy the system and the game, let alone a Vita if they don't already have one. I think they should just focus on releasing FFXV solely as a platform title.

Oh, and the prices may not be accurate in my little calculation here; a lot of this was based on about 5 minutes of internet research. I personally paid for a PS3 TWICE because it did break shortly after the warranty expired. I got savvy on the second purchase and just got it in Craigslist. ;)

^ Pre-order online. ;P

@Nephany- But you won't really need to buy a Vita to play it. If they use it, it'll be optional. I don't understand the need of buying a warranty from the store either. All consoles come with a year long warranty for free from the manufacturer. FFXV won't come out for some time, so it's not like you'd need to find that cash all at the same time either. So really it's $460+tax or less if you find a deal for the console, the game, and in store that doesn't charge tax. ;P

Nephany
06-19-2013, 03:22 PM
I buy everything on Craigslist now. :D
I already have a Vita. I was just dramatizing how much it would be if someone wanted to get everything. ;]

I had anticipated waiting for the PS4 to be out for a while before buying it. Usually they come out with different versions and if you wait, you have time to see what issues other people have with theirs.

This just reminded me of the pocket station for FFVIII. Who actually owned that thing? O_o

Also, official English plot of FFXV & descriptions of the cast:

The only crystal left to the world lies in the Kingdom of Lucis. Upon striking a peace with the garrison state of Niflheim, Lucis rejoices in having at last brought the cold war to a close. Their celebrations, however, are premature. Under the guise of amity, Niflheim dispels the anti-armament runewall and launches a full-scale invasion of the kingdom. The peaceful lives Crown Prince Noctis and his entourage once knew are consumed by the flames of war as they struggle to mount a resistance.

• Noctis Lucis Caelum: A childhood affliction endowed Noctis, heir apparent to the throne of Lucis, with the mystical power to see a heavenly light, through which he could sense others’ deaths. Noctis rejects rigid royal conventions and acts as somewhat of a renegade, much to the dismay of those who tend to him. Yet while “Noct” may act brash at times, he does so in defense of those loyal to him.

• Gladiolus Amicitia: As lord of the noble House Amicitia, Gladiolus continues a line sworn to protect the crown. “Gladio” shares a friendship with Noctis that transcends birth and title, and his loyalty to his liege is born not of duty, but of brotherhood.

• Ignis Stupeo* Scientia: Ever the unwavering voice of reason, Ignis was weaned on shrewd logic and a classical education from boyhood so that he might one day counsel the would-be king, Noctis. He applies the deep mutual understanding and trust they have built over time to help smooth over Noctis’s brusqueness with others.
* Middle name has been included in Japanese press, but excluded here.

• Prompto Argentum: The puckish playboy Prompto befriended Noctis in his school days. He wears a chip on his shoulder as an outsider to the royal circle, but remains eager to do all he can for the cause.

• Cor Leonis: A living legend of Lucian lore, Lord Commander Cor Leonis’s devotion to the art of war is surpassed only by that to his king. Little love is lost between the ill-starred stalwart and Noctis’s retinue, yet honor binds him to keep watch over the group all the same.

Leviathan Is A Top-Rank Summon in Final Fantasy XV
(http://www.finalfantasy-fxn.net/index.php?page=article&article=Leviathan-Is-A-Top-Rank-Summon-in-Final-Fantasy-XV--1939)
Dengeki has conducted a new interview with director, Tetsuya Nomura, on Final Fantasy XV. Much of the information given has been covered; however, Nomura did offer new insights into the game's content and development! Some of the highlights from the interview includes:

One reason to move the development to the next-generation platform is because the PlayStation 3 showed limitations. One example is that the processing power of the current-generation console can't keep up when a car is sped up in the world map.
Co-op multiplayer mode is considered.
Smartphone and tablet connectivity are considered.
Nomura desired for all scenes in which Noctis isn't in control to be pre-rendered CG, but it's not a realistic approach. Therefore, those seen will be remade in the same quality of Agni's Philosophy by utilizing the Luminous Engine with the help of the Visual Works team.
When an enemy is locked on, it becomes a lens flare.
Summons is based on a ranking system. Leviathan, for example, is one of the top-ranking summon and it shows in its massive size.
Noctis has to defeat the summon before he can acquire it.
The theme of the story is "bond" and there will be a lot of humor. The story is about recovering the crystal of Noctis' kingdom

Erren Van Duine of Nova Crystallis has written up a summarized translation (http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/06/final-fantasy-xv-is-a-story-about-recovering-the-crystal/) of the interview.

I gotta say how awesome it is to finally see some news on FF 15! Versus 13 was the game I was most excited to own when I first bought a PS3. I'm just glad the game is still coming out and it's looking better than ever!

It's very refreshing to see a lot of consistent news coming around FF15 after sooooo many months of silence. Hope they give a release date soon! I'm betting it won't be until Winter 2014

Eh, I think the bigger question is: Which summons will be the lower-ranking summons? :|
The usual ones that you get first are Ifrit & Shiva so they are likely in the low ranks, and yeah, carbuncle would also likely be low rank as it is generally a support summon.

Zenith
06-25-2013, 09:05 AM
hmm... if Ifrit does make a return in XV, does anyone think the design will look similar to that of FFVII's Ifrit ? Because Nomura did mention the monster designs in XV are of the same designs as in VII only in more detail.

What if the "knights of the round" make a surprising return too.. ? as a high ranking secret summon?

@Serah: I'm hoping that low ranking summons will be the usual suspects. Shiva, Ifrit, etc. Id like to see a lot of the classics, none of that BS from XII or the transformers from XIII.

Hmm the city modelled after Venezia we see in the trailer is a city in the kingdom of Accordo not Lucis, Lucis I guess is the one in the 2011 trailer based on Tokyo. So the initial attack of Niflheim starts in Accordo? Strange considering the only crystal left is in Lucis.
Guess the Accordo part takes place before the events in Lucis, Noctis and Co. fail to protect the crystal in Accordo, or the other way around, coz they revealed Leviathan is high-rank summon :P can't really put it together.
One thing is for certain, that the dialogue during the trailer doesn't correspond to the images we see, coz the dialogue in the 2011 trailer is almost the same, except Ignis does more talking, what's with not revealing Ignis in playable form? and we haven't heard his voice again :P

Agreed. The whole Niflheim invasion stuff does share elements of the Milites Empire's takeover of the Suzaku Peristylium, at least based on the plot blurb so far. I just hope that it's not an exact similarity between XV's plot and Type-0's plot, haha (even though I don't really mind :P)

Final Fantasy XV Fighting Gameplay Is Really Fast - You Can't See What's Happening At Times
(http://www.finalfantasy-fxn.net/index.php?page=article&article=Final-Fantasy-XV-Fighting-Gameplay-Is-Really-Fast---You-Cant-See-Whats-Happening-At-Times--1943)

Famitsu has another interview with director Tetsuya Nomura this week. A few things have been mentioned before, but there are a lot more new and juicy insights for the fans regarding the development and content of the game. A few interesting highlights include:

1) The story of Final Fantasy Versus XIII remains intact in Final Fantasy XV despite the re-branding and platform change for development

2) Fightning gameplay can get really speedy and the player may not know what's going on at times!

3) Cor Leonis is a 42 year old man and wield a Katana. He will face lots of misfortune. *Uh oh*

There Will Be More Female Characters Besides Stella and Black-Hair Girl
(http://www.finalfantasy-fxn.net/index.php?page=article&article=There-Will-Be-More-Female-Characters-Besides-Stella-and-Black-Hair-Girl--1944)
Dengeki PlayStation has new information on Final Fantasy XV from director Tetsuya Nomura. The key points includes:

-The driver in the Final Fantasy Versus XIII 2011 Trailer is NOT Cor Leonis.

-The warp ability is exclusive to Noctis Lucis Caelum. The E3 trailers only show the "short" version; there is also a long version yet to be seen.
-There are male characters aplenty seen in the E3 trailers, but there are more female unnanounced characters in the game besides Stella Nox Fleuret and the unnamed "blair-hair girl".

-The initial party includes Noctis, Ignis, Gladiolus, and Prompto. Cor Leonis will join the party later.

-Developers want to find console-specific gimmick such as the PlayStation 4 share button.

-Clothing design asymmetry is seen between Noctis and his pals versus people of Nefliem, who wears white.

...what if Stella is one of those soles?

This is a fantasy based on reality and death occurs in every day life and effects everyone.

Plus the shakespeare quotes...

...look how Romeo and Juliet ended. Their deaths brought together the feuding families. Maybe Stellas and Noctis deaths will bring together both kingdoms.

Pity that Noctis is the only one who is able to warp... Was hoping that he and Stella would have an epic battle, warping all over the place and weapons flying everywhere... The animators could really go crazy...

Stella final villain confirmed!

I actually hope she and Noctis have more than one confrontation... Think about it...

1st confrontation : Noctis is reluctant to fight her, because he still sees her as a friend, so she beats him... (this is perhaps the one we saw in the DKS3713 trailer).

2nd confrontation : Stella does something devastating to Noctis that makes him hell-bent on revenge and he now sees her as an enemy. He loses the fight because Stella is still far too powerful for him...

3rd confrontation : Noctis vs Stella - the final confrontation and final boss fight... Furthermore, Stella will NOT go "One-Winged Angel", she will look and remain the same, making it that more difficult to fight her...

...look how Romeo and Juliet ended. Their deaths brought together the feuding families. Maybe Stellas and Noctis deaths will bring together both kingdoms.

I really hope this story is not going to be like Romeo and Juliet because that would just be the "easy way out" if you know what I mean... I think when Nomura says its based on Shakespearean plays, I think he means the story-telling elements of tragedy - I don't think he's referring to specific plays like Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet...

I kind of hope Quinton Flynn isn't doing that red-headed guy's voice in the English version, his performance in the last 2 MGS games has not been particularly great even though I like the guy. Really like the sound of his Japanese voice-actor so far though. I'm kind of glad there'll be a lot of people that could be seen as antagonists throughout the game too rather than just getting one or two people from the start and knowing for sure you'll end up against them.

I agree, I want the antagonists to also get a bit of character development and backstory... I don't want to just see that person as the bad guy and kill him for the sake of the fact that he's the "bad guy". I wanna know who he is, why I'm killing him and judge for myself if he's really and truly "evil"...

@NightOwl Possibly, yes. Maybe their fight against each other is about trying to change someone's fate. Noctis has a vision of Stella killing someone close to him, and Vice Versa. Kind of like farseers being able to predict the future in XIII2. So Noctis "Versus" Stella is a battle to change that fate of what they can see in that vision and shape the future.

I think his nickname "Immortal" already raises the chance of death flag following him sadly. :(
But "immortal" implies that he's inhuman, in the sense that he survives more things that any normal "mortal" would survive. Maybe he has a few near death experiences but miraculously survive them all. A bit like the guy from Unbreakable.

thats the problem, if im nomura or Nojima , I will purposely gave him that title and show him as strong as possible , then to break him and make an impact that would stay forever in Player's Heart. :D
